The rules for using Ottered, and what you can expect from us. By making an account or using the site, you agree to them.
Last updated 19 October 2026
The short version
Anyone can use Ottered. Under-13s need a parent or carer's permission.
Keep your account to yourself and don't use your real name as your username.
Play fair: no cheating, no bots, and be kind to other players.
Shells, skins and items are just for fun and have no real-money value.
Your consumer rights are not affected by anything here.
About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Ottered, which is run by James and Ryan. Please read them along with our privacy policy and safeguarding page.
If you're under 18, please read them with a parent or carer. If you're under 13, a parent or carer must agree to them for you.
Who can use Ottered
Anyone can play and use the study tools.
If you're under 13, your account only works once a parent or carer has given permission.
You must be 18 or over to make a teacher account and run classes.
Schools that buy Ottered for their pupils may also have a separate agreement with us. If it says something different from these terms, the school's agreement wins for that school.
Your account
Give your real date of birth when you sign up. We use it to keep you safe.
Keep your password secret and don't let anyone else use your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.
Your username must not be your real name, and must not be rude, hurtful or pretend to be someone else. We can change or remove usernames that break these rules.
You can delete your account at any time on the delete account page.
Playing fair
When you use Ottered, please don't:
cheat, for example by using bots, scripts or extra accounts to win games or earn shells
take advantage of bugs. If you find one, tell us at help@ottered.co.uk
spoil games for others, for example by sharing a class's join code with people who shouldn't have it
upset, bully or harass anyone, or try to find out who other players really are
try to break, overload or get into parts of Ottered you're not meant to
copy our questions, notes or other content in bulk, or sell them
If someone breaks these rules, we may reset their scores or ranks, take away shells or items, or suspend or delete their account.
Shells, skins and items
Shells, XP, ranks, skins, hats and other items are part of the game. They aren't real money, can't be swapped for real money and can't be sold or traded outside Ottered.
We may change how they work, for example how many shells something costs, to keep the game fair and fun.
Otter Plus and school plans
Ottered is free to use. Otter Plus is an optional paid plan with extra features, and schools can pay for Otter Plus for their pupils. The price and what's included are shown before you pay.
If you're under 18, you need a parent or carer's permission to buy Otter Plus. You can cancel at any time and keep Otter Plus until the end of the period you've paid for.
Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer, including any right to cancel.
Things you make
Mind maps, flashcards, blurts and question sets you make belong to you. You let us store them and show them where you've chosen, for example to your class or, for teachers, to other teachers at your school.
Don't put anything in them that's rude or hurtful, that belongs to someone else, or that includes someone's personal details. We may remove anything that breaks these rules.
Our content
Our revision notes, questions, games, otters and designs belong to Ottered. You're welcome to use them for your own revision, and teachers can use them with their classes.
Ottered isn't connected with, or approved by, any exam board. Exam board names are trademarks of their owners.
Accuracy
We work hard to make our notes and questions accurate and up to date, but mistakes can happen and specifications change. Check anything important with your teacher or your exam board's specification. Ottered helps you revise, but we can't promise any particular grade. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.
Changes to Ottered
We're always improving Ottered, so features may change, and we may add or remove game modes or tools. We'll try to keep the site running all the time, but sometimes it may be unavailable, for example while we fix something.
Our responsibility to you
We're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that's a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or not taking reasonable care. We're not responsible for loss or damage that wasn't foreseeable, or for losses to a business.
Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add new features. We'll update the date at the top, and if the changes are important we'll tell you before they happen. If you don't agree with the new terms, you can delete your account.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If there's a disagreement, we'd like to sort it out with you directly first. If that doesn't work, the courts of England and Wales can deal with it. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
